    In 1628 he succeeded his cousin (by whom he had been adopted when but four years of age) in the Peerage under the special limitation of the patent.

    He early imbibed republican notions, and with Viscount Saye and Sele, was one of the two noblemen who refused to profess their loyalty to the King as required by the Council of York in 1639.

    "Those who were acquainted with him believed him to be well natured and just, and rather seduced and corrupted in his understanding than perverse and malicious. Whether his Passions, or Conscience swayed him, he was undoubtedly one of those who could have been with most difficulty reconciled to the government of Church or State." (Clarendon).

    Military Service:
    He fought at the Battle of Edgehill, 22 October 1642, and was appointed Major-General (for the Parliamentarians) for Warwickshire and Staffordshire, 7 January 1642/43.

    Died:
    He was struck with a musket ball while looking out of a window to direct the siege of St. Chad's Church. His death is said to have occurred "just after he had prayed publicly that, if the cause he were in were not right and just, he might be presently cut off."
