It was reported at the time of Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor's birth that his parents T.R.H. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex had chosen not to accord any title to their son, and that he would be known formally merely as Master Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. In fact, as the son and heir apparent of a duke, he will be entitled to the rank and style of the son and heir apparent of a duke; and it will therefore be the choice of the child, when he is older, whether or not to style himself Earl of Dumbarton (a subsidiary title of his father). Furthermore, he will become a Prince and entitled to the style H.R.H. when his grandfather succeeds to the throne. Upon the death of his father, he will inherit the Dukedom of Sussex.

Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor is legitimate according to the revision of the canon law of the Church of England made in 2002 by the General Synod, which provided “exceptional circumstances” in which “a divorced person may marry again in church during the lifetime of a former spouse.” Without this revision, he would have been illegitimate under canon law owing to his mother's having previously contracted a marriage with Mr. Trevor Engelson.
